For the first time in 46 years, the Madison High School Warhawks finished undefeated at 10-0 in regular-season football action.
The Warhawks capped the perfect campaign with a 41-0 blowout victory over the visiting Centreville Wildcats Friday night (Nov. 8). Madison also wrapped up a perfect Concorde District record of 5-0 to clinch the outright league title.
Of all public-school football teams in Fairfax County, Madison is the only one to finish 10-0. The regular season began for Madison with a 17-0 shutout of Stone Bridge and ended with the blanking of Centreville, the team’s third shutout this fall.
Next for the Warhawks is the eight-team 6D North Region tournament, in which Madison is the three-time defending champion and will be the No. 1 or 2 seed. Its first-round game will be at home, but the opponent is not yet officially determined.
In the win over Centreville, Madison took control early, leading 14-0 after the first quarter, 21-0 at halftime and 34-0 after three periods.
Runningback and kick returner Dominic Knicely was a leader of the Warhawks’ scoring barrage. He ran for a touchdown and scored another on a 73-yard punt return. Knicely rushed for 56 yards and caught two passes for 21.
Madison quarterback Cael Yates threw two touchdown passes to Harry Lewis, covering five and 22 yards. Alex Davis-Membrano had a three-yard scoring run and Jack Ambruzs returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. Julian Hopewell booted four extra points and Jackson Pham one.
Yates passed for 78 yards and Matthew Weiler ran for 35.
Tackling leaders on defense for Madison were Ambruzs (one sack), Graham Gorkowski, Luke Salvosa and Caden Green.
Madison was 9-1 during the regular season last fall and in 2021.
