A Fairfax City donut shop is back in business today (Thursday) following three days of tax-related closures.
Employees at Duck Donuts confirmed that the store was shut down on Monday (Nov. 18) by the Virginia Department of Taxation, which had placed multiple tax liens on the business.
“We had an issue, we fixed it, and we moved on,” franchise owner Keith Kirkland told FFXnow.
A Reddit user shared a post yesterday (Wednesday) with a picture of a notice affixed to the store’s door, alleging that Kirkland’s business, CuriousParrot, had failed to remit roughly $230,000 in Virginia taxes to the state.
Five memorandums of lien had been placed on the business, according to the notice, including two filed in Fairfax County Circuit Court and one in Fairfax City Circuit Court. The other two liens had been filed in Arlington County Circuit Court.
Liens can be placed on a business if taxes are not paid within 30 days of the due date, according to Virginia law.
When asked whether the store or parent organization CuriousParrot LLC owed any taxes to the state, Kirkland said, “We’re open, so no, I don’t owe anything.”
The Virginia Department of Tax Administration didn’t return a request for comment by press time.
Kirkland owned both the Fairfax City and Herndon locations of Duck Donuts, a North Carolina-based chain, since April 2019, according to his LinkedIn page. The Fairfax City store, located at 10694 Fairfax Blvd, opened in 2015.
The business offers made-to-order donuts that can be customized with eight different icings, 12 toppings — including bacon — and 13 drizzles to top them off. Additionally, the Duck Donuts menu features an assortment of breakfast sandwiches, ice creams, coffees and other drinks.
There are currently two other locations of the chain in Fairfax County, located in Centreville and Springfield. A spokesperson confirmed plans for a Vienna store earlier this year, though subsequent requests for an update have gone unanswered.
