Three Potomac School girls tennis players chosen to all-state teams

A standout girls tennis season by the Potomac School Panthers was capped when three players from the high-school squad were selected to Division I all-state teams.

Juniors Riece Grimes-Thomas and Riley Williams made first-team private-school all-state. Sophomore Taylor Shen was chosen to the second team.

The three helped Potomac School (15-3 overall record) earn the No. 1 Division I state ranking and top seed in the state tournament, where it finished second. The Panthers lost to No. 2 seed Collegiate of Richmond in the title match.

Potomac School was 2-1 in the state tournament, defeating No. 8 seed Norfolk Catholic, 5-1, in the first round, then fourth seed St. Catherine’s, 5-0, in the semifinals.

Prior to the state tournament, Potomac School finished second in the AA Division tournament of the Independent School League.

Williams played No. 1 singles for Potomac School, where she compiled a 15-3 record. Grimes-Thomas was 11-5 at No. 2 and Shen 13-3 at No. 3.

“They all three were outstanding for us and helped the team achieve what we did this season,” Potomac School coach Chris Caskin said.

Oakcrest School player Mary Cremers also was chosen second-team all-state.
