Robinson now 4-0, rallies past visiting W-L in girls hoop action

They started slow and fell behind early, but by game’s end the Robinson Rams had rallied and were still undefeated in girls high-school basketball action.

Host Robinson (4-0) defeated the Washington-Liberty Generals, 36-29, Monday night (Dec. 9) in a non-district game in Fairfax. The Generals, who were without injured starting center Eve Jungman, fell to 1-2.

The Rams fell behind 6-0 and 8-4 in the first quarter and trailed 10-6 at period’s end. Robinson scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to take a 16-10 lead and were ahead the rest of the way, leading 24-13 at halftime and 29-17 after three periods.

A steal and layup by London Augustin gave the Rams the lead for good at 12-10 with 5:19 to play in the second quarter.

Leading Robinson, the defending champions of the 6C North Region and Patriot District tournaments, was senior forward Georgia Simonsen with 16 points, nine rebounds, six steals and two blocked shots. She scored eight points in the second quarter.

Augustin had 10 points, five steals and three rebounds. Also for the Rams, Madison Coutinho scored seven with three assists, and Jaymie Bevins had two points, four rebounds and one steal.

Robinson’s other wins were over Marshall, 52-43, Potomac, 51-21, and Bowie, 60-46, in non-district games.

The Rams next play Friday (Dec. 13) on the road against the Langley Saxons (2-1), a perennial Liberty District and 6D North Region contender. Langley defeated Robinson, 43-39, last season.

In Langley’s recent 59-54 home win over Woodgrove, Anya Rahman scored 31 points, Peyton Daley scored eight with seven rebounds and Alice Allen added 11 points with five boards.
