The police chief for Prince George’s Community College in Maryland has been arrested after he allegedly crashed into another driver near the Reserve at Fairfax Corner Apartments while drunk earlier this month.
Derek Myers, a 55-year-old Burke resident, was driving east on Random Hills Road when he lost control of his Hyundai Elantra near Fairfax Hills Way around 7:30 p.m. last Friday, Dec. 6, the Fairfax County Police Department says, citing preliminary findings by detectives.
“Myers entered the westbound lanes on Random Hills [Road] and struck the victim’s Honda CRV,” the FCPD said. “The victim was transported to a local hospital in life-threatening condition.”
Myers was taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.
According to the FCPD, detectives determined that Myers had a blood alcohol content level of around 0.28, well above the legal limit of 0.08.
Myers has been charged with driving while intoxicated, resulting in a maiming — a Class 6 or Class 4 felony in Virginia, depending on the extent of the victim’s injuries. Potential prison sentences range from one to a maximum of five years for a Class 6 felony or two to 10 years for a Class 4 felony.
Myers is in custody without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
