The annual girls and boys neighborhood varsity basketball doubleheader between the Madison Warhawks and Marshall Statesmen didn’t provide much suspense this year.
The host Warhawks swept the high-school games by comfortable margins the night of Dec. 13. In front of a large crowd, including loud-cheering student sections, the Madison girls won the opener in Vienna, 45-29, and the boys took the nightcap 55-43.
The Madison girls (4-2) surged to a 25-4 first-half lead and the boys (3-2) were in front by as many as 19 points in the third quarter.
The Marshall girls fell to 3-3 and boys to 4-2.
In the boys game, Madison was ahead 24-16 at halftime, then 42-23 late in the third period. Marshall rallied to pull as close as eight points.
“We had a lot of players do a lot of different good small things,” Madison coach Kevin Roller told FFXnow.
Ryan Furlong had 22 points, seven rebounds and two steals for Madison. Despite early foul trouble, Michael Dinkelacker had 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a block.
Point guard Hobbes Fiel, who will play at St. Mary’s College in Maryland, missed his first five shots, then found his touch finishing with 12 points (two three-pointer), four rebounds and two steals. William Chappell had three points, four assists and two steals.
“Hobbes has a much higher confidence level now,” Roller said. “Ryan cuts to the basket so well and he [Dinkelacker] finds him with passes.”
William Feuchter (two assists) and Sage Huang (two assists and a steal) contributed to the win off the bench.
Marshall was led by senior center Andrew Krisko with 17 points and nine rebounds. Shreyas Vaidya had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists; Trey Lonardo had four points and five rebounds; Osteen Suguru had six points and three rebounds; and Jackson Fraser had three points, three steals and four assists.
“I think our youth showed some tonight in a big moment and we didn’t execute,” Marshall coach Jerry Lin said. “We start two sophomores. I like how we played hard and fought back at the end.”
There were six three-point-plays in the boys game, two each by Furlong and Dinkelacker and one each by Krisko and Fraser.
In the win for the Madison girls, Ava Wu scored 15 points and made three three-pointers; Allison Creighton had eight points and 14 rebounds; Jada Ramos-Diggs had seven points, three rebounds and two steals; and Sara Becker scored six with three rebounds.
For Marshall, Chloe Cole scored 14 off the bench, including four three-pointers; Hanna Rohde scored five; Olivia Whiteman had two blocks and three rebounds; and Madison Evans had five rebounds.
In two other recent games, the Madison girls defeated Langley, 44-41, and Meridian, 40-32. Wu scored 15 in each game, with Ramos-Diggs having 11 against Langley and Becker nine and seven in the two games.
In previous boys games, Marshall routed Falls Church, 93-25, while Madison topped the Langley Saxons, 58-50, behind 20 points from Dinkelacker and 16 from Furlong.
