The new year will bring a new coffee and snack spot to Reston.
De Clieu Coffee and Sandwich has boarded up the windows of a vacant commercial building at 2235 Soapstone Drive near 7-Eleven in anticipation of opening its third location in Northern Virginia later this winter.
The cafe is currently on track to open in mid to late February, a worker at De Clieu’s original Fairfax City location told FFXnow.
Established in 2014, De Clieu has become an anchor of Old Town Fairfax, where it sits at a corner of Main Street and University Drive. It sells specialty coffee made from beans sourced by Chicago-based Intelligentsia Roasters, along with a food menu that includes sandwiches, pastries, Belgian waffles and Manhattan bagels.
According to its website, the business takes particular pride in its “custom, housemade syrups.”
De Clieu expanded for the first time last year, opening a second location at 11923 Route 29 B in the Legato area of Fairfax on Nov. 4. That location is an independently operated partner, but it offers mostly the same menu with some variations, Northern Virginia Magazine reported.
It’s unclear whether the Reston location will also have a different owner. De Clieu didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.
Jade Lee, manager of the Old Town Fairfax location, told Northern Virginia Magazine that the business had hoped to expand for a while, and customers “often encouraged” them to add more locations, but plans got put on hold during the pandemic.
The Reston cafe will be approximately 2,049 square feet in size with an outdoor seating area, according to a commercial alteration permit issued by Fairfax County on Oct. 3, 2024. A “coming soon” sign facing the roadway suggests the business is now hiring, inviting prospective employees to apply.
Located near Snakeden Branch Trail, which puts South Lakes High School within walking distance, the standalone building at 2235 Soapstone Drive appears to have been empty since Soapstone Cleaners closed in 2016.
In addition to 7-Eleven, the small retail area is also home to a Domino’s Pizza and Alegria’s Bakery and Pupuseria.
