Two Fairfax teams top finishers at Woodbridge wrestling tourney

The West Springfield Spartans continued their strong start to the wrestling season with a second victory at a big invitational high-school meet.

The squad’s most recent title came at the 58-team Battle at the Bridge event Dec. 27-28 at Woodbridge High School. The Spartans won with 228 points, having seven wrestlers finish in the top eight.

West Springfield was led by individual champion Adam Husseini at 113 pounds. He had a 6-0 record with four pins, a technical fall and winning by a 9-4 decision in the title match.

Second for West Springfield was Gregory Barnett at 144. He received a first-round bye, then had two pins, a technical fall and major decision en route to the final, where he lost a 9-7 decision.

Third for the Spartans were Matthew Kidd at 165 and Wylan Snoddy at 190. Fourth was Abai Beishembiev at 150. Fifth was David Carey at 175 and seventh was Hayden Carl at 157.

In previous competitions this season, West Springfield won the Pat Dulany Invitational at Langley High School with 238.5 points and was second at the NOVA Classic at Fairfax High.

Husseini, Barnett, Snoddy and Beishembiev finished first at the Pat Dulany event. Husseini won at the NOVA Classic.

The McLean Highlanders were the second highest finishing Fairfax County team at the Battle at the Bridge in 11th place, led by runner-up Phillip Davis at 132. He finished 4-1 with a pin, a technical fall and major decision.

Also for McLean, Jacob Daly was third at 126, Billy Arslan fourth at 120 and William Lewey sixth at 215.

Other individual Battle at the Bridge champions from Fairfax schools were South Lakes’ Aiden Sanders at 150, West Potomac’s Jeremiah Segraves at 157 and Hayfield’s Ethan Osburn at 190. All three had 6-0 records.

Segraves had five pins and a technical fall. Sanders and Osburn each had three pins and two technical falls.

Thomas Jefferson’s Jonathan French was second at 113, as was Langley’s Robert Roncskevitz at 165 and Ashavand Ariaban at 285. Third were George Lynch of Falls Church at 144 and Annandale’s Jose Vera Puna at 215.
