A private tennis coach in Lorton has been arrested after a student alleged that he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with her.

The victim told officers on Nov. 23 that Tony Adams, 62, had “subjected [her] to inappropriate conduct” when she was taking lessons from him, the Fairfax County Police Department says. She was underage at the time.

Fairfax County Public Schools has decided to resolve a former student’s lawsuit challenging its policies supporting transgender students before it can reach trial.

The now-graduated student, identified as Jane Doe and represented by the right-wing organization America First Legal, recently accepted the Fairfax County School Board’s offer of a judgment that includes $50 and compensation for legal fees, according to court documents.

A West Springfield High School student died earlier this week from a drug overdose, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) officials have confirmed.

FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid announced the death in a letter on Wednesday (Sept. 3), sharing guidance for parents, students and community members.

For three years now, winning state championships or finishing second — all by close margins — has been the norm for the West Springfield Spartans boys’ indoor track-and-field team.

This winter, the Spartans won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state crown by one of the smallest lead possible: a half-point.

The West Springfield Spartans have again claimed a significant swimming and diving team championship, despite winning few, if any, events.

The latest title won by the high school boys’ squad was the 6C North Region Occoquan competition, where they amassed 367 points on Friday, Feb. 7. The Lake Braddock Bruins finished second in the region with 310 points.

By scoring in every event, the West Springfield Spartans amassed enough points to win a second straight Patriot District boys swimming and diving championship.

The Spartans won two of the 12 boys events and scored 452 points in the high-school meet, as their depth showed throughout the competition. Lake Braddock finished second with 410.

Behind the performances of winning distance runners and pole vaulters, the West Springfield Spartans won the girls and boys Patriot District track-and-field championships.

At those high-school meets in Landover, Md., three different runners on each team won the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Two former high-school players from Fairfax County have helped the Division III Randolph-Macon College men’s and women’s basketball teams to standout records during the 2024-25 campaign.

West Springfield High graduate McKenzie Matheny has helped the women’s squad to a 17-1 record and 16 straight wins through Wednesday (Jan. 29) action.

A number of local track-and-field athletes had top finishes in the girls competition at the Virginia Showcase 2025 indoor high-school meet in Virginia Beach.

One of the top performers was Herndon High School runner Meghan Sullivan. The senior won the 3,200-meters in 10:57.2 and was a very close second in the 1,600 in 5:08.5.


Countywide

Fairfax County Public Schools has anointed a new principal for its prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJ).

Michael Mukai, a TJ alum who currently serves as the principal at West Springfield High School, was hired after a nationwide search following the departure of Dr. Ann Bonitatibus, who led the magnet school for about seven years, FCPS announced yesterday (Thursday).
