Local players making big impacts for two college basketball teams

Two former high-school players from Fairfax County have helped the Division III Randolph-Macon College men’s and women’s basketball teams to standout records during the 2024-25 campaign.

West Springfield High graduate McKenzie Matheny has helped the women’s squad to a 17-1 record and 16 straight wins through Wednesday (Jan. 29) action.

In 18 games, the 5-foot-11 junior forward is the Yellow Jackets’ second-leading scorer (11.3 points per game) and rebounder (7.1).

Matheny is second on the team with 22 blocked shots, to go with 18 steals and 18 assists.

She scored a single-game season high 31 points in Randolph-Macon’s recent victory over the Virginia Wesleyan University Marlins. Matheny was 15 of 18 shooting from the floor and had eight rebounds, three blocked shots and one assist.

For the Randolph-Macon men, Langley High graduate Amr Areikat is a 6-1 starting junior guard. He has helped that squad to a 16-3 mark, 13-game winning streak and a ranking of 13th nationally by d3hoops.com.

The Yellow Jackets also defeated Virginia Wesleyan for their most recent victory.

Areikat averages 10.1 points per game (third on the team). He averages 3.2 rebounds, has a team second best 43 assists, has 12 steals and has made 25 three-pointers (third).

Areikat’s best game this season was when he made five three-pointers, had six assists and scored 18 points.

One other former Fairfax County player also is impactful for the Randolph-Macon women’s team. Westfield High graduate and sophomore guard Bella Bruce averages 6.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, has made 19 three-pointers and has blocked 19 shots. Bruce has started all 18 games.

For the Virginia Wesleyan teams that lost to Randolph-Macon, two players from Fairfax County on those squads also are enjoying productive seasons.

South County High graduate Paul Anderson, a 6-3 sophomore guard, averages seven points per game for the men’s team. He has started every contest and has helped the squad to a 15-4 record and national ranking of 25th. In 18 games, he also pulls an average of four rebounds an outing and has 31 steals.

For the women’s team, Keagan Schwab also is a South County grad. The fifth-year player has started 17 times, averages 11.1 points and 2.8 rebounds per game, and has made 29 three-pointers.

Schwab has scored 976 career points. The 5-8 guard played the past three seasons for the Division III University of Mary Washington team, scoring 787 points, and her first at Division I American University, playing in two games.

Schwab has started 81 of the 82 Division III career games she has played.
