West Springfield sweeps Patriot District track & field meets

Behind the performances of winning distance runners and pole vaulters, the West Springfield Spartans won the girls and boys Patriot District track-and-field championships.

At those high-school meets in Landover, Md., three different runners on each team won the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Overall, the West Springfield boys won six events and the girls five.

For the West Springfield girls, Rickelle Bush won the 1,000 in 3:00.5, Allie Horner was first in the 1,600 (5:03.08) and Adeline Barker captured the 3,200 (11:04.33).

The distance winners for the boys were Gavin Smith in the 1,000 (2:35.24), Jack Pritchard in the 1,600 (4:27.43) and Edison Dean in the 3,200 (9:54.44).

Dean also was fourth in the 1,600 and seventh in the 1,000, Pritchard was fifth in the 1,000 and Smith sixth in the 500. Bush was fifth in the 500.

Other top runners for the West Springfield girls were Allyson Hall (second, 1,000), Addison Mau (third, 1000), Adeline Barker (fourth, 1,600), Ariyon Hampton (fourth, 55 hurdles), Marie Campbell (fifth, 3,200 and sixth, 1,600), Maeva-Lyonna Bock (sixth, 300) and Evelyn Englert (sixth, 55 hurdles).

The 4×800 relay of Mau, Horner, Hall and Anna Johnson won in 9:31.1. The 4×200 relay was third and the 4×400 fifth.

Hannah Luger won the girls pole vault with a leap of 9-0, and her teammate Caroline White was sixth.

In other field events, Natalie Houchins was third in the high jump, with Breilynn Daniels fourth. Meredith Stuck was fourth in the shot put and Laurel McKenzie fifth, and Noemi Suarez was sixth in the long jump.

Another top runner for the West Springfield boys was Mark-Anthony Whyte, with a victory in the 55 dash (6.46) and finishing seventh in the 300.

Others were Aaqil Lee (third, 55 hurdles), Nicholas Bailey (third, 500 and fifth, 300), Mark Gaydos (fourth, 1,000), Eric McGuffin (sixth, 55 hurdles) and Kyler Roberts (seventh, 500).

The boys 4×800 relay of Gaydos, Pritchard, Elias Dean and Sebastian Haworth won in 8:10.92. The 4×200 was second and the 4×400 fourth.

Winning the pole vault for the West Springfield boys was Michael Murray with a jump of 15-1. Hs teammate Nicholas Spada was second.

Also in the field events, Evan Bauer was fourth in the shot put with James Leos sixth; Andrew Fingall was fifth in the high jump and David Thompson sixth; and Scott Cooper was seventh in the triple jump.
