For three years now, winning state championships or finishing second — all by close margins — has been the norm for the West Springfield Spartans boys’ indoor track-and-field team.

This winter, the Spartans won the Virginia High School League Class 6 state crown by one of the smallest lead possible: a half-point.

Led by a group of sprinters, the South County Stallions sped their way to an indoor track-and-field girls’ state championship.

South County High School in Lorton won the Virginia High School League Class 6 team title in Virginia Beach by a comfortable margin on Tuesday, March 11, amassing 88 points. The Robinson Rams from Fairfax were a distant second with 47.

With athletes placing in multiple events, the South Lakes Seahawks delivered a versatile performance last week to win the boys 6D North Region track-and-field championship.

South Lakes amassed 119 points to finish well in front of the runner-up Wakefield Warriors with 59.

It was double dominance for the South Lakes Seahawks at the Concorde District track-and-field championships.

The girls and boys high-school teams each won the meets by wide margins, thanks to finishing first in multiple events at the Prince George’s County Learning Center in Landover, Md.

Behind the performances of winning distance runners and pole vaulters, the West Springfield Spartans won the girls and boys Patriot District track-and-field championships.

At those high-school meets in Landover, Md., three different runners on each team won the 1,000, 1,600 and 3,200-meter races.

Much travel will be involved over the next month for teams participating and spectators attending some of the upcoming girls and boys postseason track-and-field meets for local high-school squads.

That has been the case every year for many winter indoor seasons, as those postseason meets are no longer held at the indoor facilities of George Mason University.

A number of local track-and-field athletes had top finishes in the girls competition at the Virginia Showcase 2025 indoor high-school meet in Virginia Beach.

One of the top performers was Herndon High School runner Meghan Sullivan. The senior won the 3,200-meters in 10:57.2 and was a very close second in the 1,600 in 5:08.5.

Runners for the Marshall Statesmen were successful at two different track-and-field meets this past weekend, helping the girls and boys teams win titles at one of the competitions.

Marshall won championships at the high-school meet among Fairfax County teams at Thomas Jefferson Community Center in Arlington. The girls won with 86 points and the boys with 82.
