South Lakes boys’ team wins region track & field championship

With athletes placing in multiple events, the South Lakes Seahawks delivered a versatile performance last week to win the boys 6D North Region track-and-field championship.

South Lakes amassed 119 points to finish well in front of the runner-up Wakefield Warriors with 59.

The indoor high school meet was held over two days, starting Feb. 13 in Prince George’s County and moving on Feb. 14 to Episcopal High School in Alexandria due to weather issues.

Leading the Seahawks was double-event winner Blake Jackson. The junior won the long (22-2 1/4) and triple (43-7 1/2) jumps and ran on the third-place 4×200 relay.

South Lakes senior Finn Middleton won the 55-meter hurdles in 7.36 seconds and placed second in the 55 and 300 dashes. The team’s other event winner was senior Marcus Coker in the 300 (34.63).

The Seahawks scored 17 points in the 1,000, with George Hood leading the way by placing second. Isaac Yudkovsky was third, Ryan Quinn fifth and Jason Raffel sixth. Raffel also was fourth in the 1,600.

Third in events for South Lakes were Dylan Walsh in the 500 and Milo Wilkins in the shot put. Fourth were Aiden Bednarz in the 500 and Cliff Trapp in the 55 hurdles.

Hayato Tano was eighth in the 500 and Dylan Hall competed in the shot.

The Seahawks’ 4×800 relay of Yudkovsky, Hood, John Robinson and Noah Jacks finished second. Also second was the 4×400 relay of Walsh, Bednarz, Trapp and Coker. Also on the 4×200 relay were Trapp, Walsh and Coker.

The region title comes after South Lakes won the Concorde District crown a week earlier.

For the Chantilly boys in the region meet, Tristan Thurneysen won the 3,200 in 9:33.03, Christopher Hwang was first in the shot (49-9 1/4) and Trent Saben was first in the pole vault (14-6).

For Centreville, Danny McGlynn won the 1,600 (4:20.55) with teammate Elijah Post a close second (4:20.91). The two ran on the winning 4×800 relay (8:09.83) with Chris Siriwardene and Wyatt Jessup.

Madison High’s Jamie Fraser was first in the 1,000 (2:36.16) and Westfield’s Huda Johnson won the high jump (5-9).
