A number of local track-and-field athletes had top finishes in the girls competition at the Virginia Showcase 2025 indoor high-school meet in Virginia Beach.
One of the top performers was Herndon High School runner Meghan Sullivan. The senior won the 3,200-meters in 10:57.2 and was a very close second in the 1,600 in 5:08.5.
The winning time was a 5:08.4 by Vivian Kelly of Georgetown Prep.
During the fall, Sullivan was one of the state’s top cross-country runners, winning Concorde District and 6D North Region championships.
The showcase meet, which included dozens of schools and many top athletes in their events throughout Virginia and multiple states, was held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Also in the 1,600 at the showcase event, Oakton High’s Abbi Mesfin placed fourth, Robinson’s Petra Gruendel seventh and West Springfield’s Allyson Hall 17th.
In the 3,200, Robinson’s Ariana Lopez was third and Langley’s Hazel Calway 11th.
South County High’s Mia Mason placed high in multiple events. She was second in the long jump, third in the 60 and 55 hurdles, third in the 60 dash, fourth in the 55 dash and was a member of South County’s second-place 4×200 relay.
Also on that South County relay were Julia Wallace, Catalina Sanchious and Cameron Thompson.
West Springfield’s 4×400 and 4×800 relays each finished second, with South Lakes third in the 4×800.
From South Lakes, Caroline Elliott won the invitational mile in 4:53.04 and was first in the time-converted 1,600 (4:51.5) and 1,500 (4:34.91).
Colleen Gilbert of Woodson won the high jump at 5-feet and her teammate Hadley Vanek was second in the 1,000.
Oakton’s Aurora Ayala was second in the pole vault.
