One of Reston Association’s most popular programs is coming back later this month.
The Senior Movie Day program will kick off its 30th year on Jan. 22 with a screening of the Annette Bening-starring biopic “Nyad” at Look Dine-In Cinemas (11940 Market Street) in Reston Town Center.
Started in 1994 with one year off in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program offers free movie screenings to adults 55 and older on the fourth Wednesday of every month. It’s sponsored by Friends of Reston, the volunteer-run nonprofit that supports RA through fundraising and community projects.
“Our community has told us they look forward to Senior Movie Day each year,” RA Director of Recreation Laura Kowalski said. “We are thrilled to celebrate 30 years of Senior Movie Day and hope to welcome audiences for years to come.”
Traditionally held at Reston Town Center’s movie theater, Senior Movie Days were put on hold when the previous tenant, Bow Tie Cinemas, shuttered in May 2022. During that time, RA continued organizing outdoor summer film series as a supplement, but the senior-focused screenings didn’t return until last year after Look opened in fall 2023.
The upcoming “Nyad” screening will be followed on Feb. 26 with “It Ends With Us,” the controversy-igniting adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling book about a woman grappling with an abusive relationship, and on March 26 with “Here,” a time-spanning drama that reunited “Forrest Gump” stars Tom Hanks and Robin Wright with director Robert Zemeckis.
No advance registration is required for any of the screenings, which all start at 10 a.m. The theater doors will open at 9:15 a.m. so patrons can get refreshments and socialize.
Future films will be posted on RA’s online events calendar as they’re confirmed.
