Older adults looking for a more affordable place to live in Fairfax County will have the opportunity to get in line for an apartment next week.
The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) will accept waitlist applications for its affordable housing properties reserved for seniors from 8 a.m. on Monday (Jan. 13) through Sunday, Jan. 19 at 11:59 p.m.
The county operates a number of affordable housing programs, where rental prices are controlled or subsidized. Some properties and units are directly owned by the FCRHA, while others are owned and managed by private companies that agree to keep units affordable at certain income levels for a period of time.
Next week, the authority is opening up the waitlists for select properties in its Project Based Voucher program, which uses federal subsidies to cover a portion of the tenant’s monthly rent.
For some properties, all members of the household must be 62 or older to qualify:
- The Lodge at Autumn Willow: a new independent living community with one and two-bedroom apartments at 13175 Autumn Willow Drive, just outside of Centreville
- Herndon Harbor House: one-bedroom apartments on Grace Street and Jorss Place in the Town of Herndon
- Lindsay Hill Senior Housing: one and two-bedroom apartments at 8915 Pink Carnation Court in Lorton
- North Hill Senior Residences: two-bedroom apartments at 7245 Nightingale Lane in Hybla Valley, part of a development that opened in 2023
- Oakwood Meadow Senior Residences: one and two-bedroom apartments at 5815 South Van Dorn Street in Rose Hill
Applications will also be accepted for four properties where only the head of the household is required to be 62 or older:
- Coppermine Place II: two-bedroom apartments at 13395 Coppermine Road in the Frying Pan area south of Herndon
- Lake Anne House: efficiency, one and two-bedroom apartments at 11444 North Shore Drive in Reston. A new building opened after a redevelopment in 2022.
- Belmont at One University: two-bedroom apartments at 4518 University Drive near Fairfax City
- Lincolnia Senior Apartments: efficiency and studio apartments at 4710 N. Chambliss Street in Lincolnia
Applications will be accepted through an online Rent Cafe portal on the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development’s website. Applicants can choose multiple properties and are randomly selected for placement on a waitlist.
Here’s more information about the application process from an FCRHA news release:
Instructions for using Rent Café are available in English and Spanish. Individuals who need assistance can call 703-246-5100 or come to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) office at 3700 Pender Drive in Fairfax, VA.
Applications received through Rent Café will be randomly selected to be placed on a waiting list. All applications received have an equal opportunity to be selected. Once a unit becomes available, the households who were placed on a waiting list will be contacted, screened, and determined eligible based on income level, household size, and the size of the rental unit. Households cannot currently receive other federal rental housing assistance to qualify.
