The stage is set for a showdown for first in Concorde District girls basketball between neighborhood rivals Chantilly Chargers and Centreville Wildcats.
The game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Centreville.
Both high-school teams are atop the standings with 3-0 records. Centreville is 11-2 overall and Chantilly 10-4.
Each team improved to 3-0 with recent wins. Chantilly nipped the host and previously-undefeated Oakton Cougars, 53-52, in a seesaw game, and Centreville routed the South Lakes Seahawks, 53-18.
Chantilly won on a three-point play by junior center Alexandra Wilson with 49 seconds to play to give the Chargers a 53-51 lead. Her basket came off an assist from Amelia Hilton, then she made the following free throw when she was fouled on her shot.
The winning sequence was set up on the other end of the court when Wilson blocked a shot and the loose ball was gathered by Emerson Mustard.
Oakton (14-1, 2-1) led 8-2 early in the game, then a 15-0 Chantilly run gave the Chargers a 20-11 lead.
The Cougars slowly rallied to take the lead at 48-46 late in the fourth quarter on a three-point play by Molly Kenefick. Her basket was setup from a passing from Sophie Toole.
Wilson, Alivia Tarry and Madeleine Bernet were among other starters for Chantilly.
The Chargers defeated the Madison Warhawks, 45-31, and South Lakes Seahawks, 48-36, for their other district wins.
Centreville routed the Westfield Bulldogs, 64-25, in another recent district game.
Madison (7-7, 1-2) snapped a two-game losing streak with a recent 49-27 win over Westfield in Concorde play.
Ava Wu scored 16 points and had five assists for Madison, Sara Becker had 13 points and three rebounds, Jada Ramos-Diggs scored seven with four rebounds, and Allison Creighton had four points and three rebounds.
