A longstanding family-owned restaurant in Vienna will soon be converted into a bakery whose website declares that “everyone is family.”
Bakeshop, which got its start 15 years ago in Arlington, is taking over the storefront at 421 Maple Avenue that was vacated last summer by Skorpios Maggio’s Greek Family Restaurant.
In business since 1990, Skorpios Maggio’s closed on June 13, 2024 after owners Chris and Sherry Maggio announced that they had step away to “prioritize our family time and health,” Patch reported. At the time, the family said they were finalizing plans to hand off the restaurant to new owners who would continue the “traditions and flavors you have come to love at Maggio’s.”
It’s unclear what happened with the attempt to keep Skorpios Maggio’s going, but the 1,934-square-foot space has now been leased to Bakeshop, according to a site plan for the strip mall.
After baking cupcakes in his mother’s kitchen that were sold to local coffee shops, Bakeshop founder and owner Justin Stegall launched his own store in Arlington’s Clarendon neighborhood in 2010 at the height of the national gourmet cupcake craze.
Unlike the New York-based chain Crumbs widely credited with starting the fancy cupcake trend, Bakeshop managed to evolve beyond its origins and now also sells other desserts, including regular cakes, macrons, cookies and pies, as well as breakfast sandwiches.
The business expanded to Falls Church in 2019 and later crossed the Potomac River into Georgetown, though that location appears to now be permanently closed.
Vienna was chosen as the next expansion site because the Bakeshop team “always loved the community feel,” according to Monica Garcia, Bakeshop’s general manager.
“Our Vienna location will be similar to the other two Bakeshops but will have its own unique identity and feel,” she told FFXnow by email.
In addition to its unique, handcrafted bakery treats, which include some vegan and gluten-free options, Bakeshop is distinguished by a commitment to hiring local high school students, giving it a strong connection to each community where it’s located, Garcia says.
Bakeshop hopes to open in Vienna this summer.
