Chantilly girls squad vaults over McLean to win region gymnastics crown

The Chantilly Chargers narrowly won the team title and had the individual all-around winner at the girls 6D North Region gymnastics championship this week.

The Chargers won their first team regional crown since 2011 with a 141.450 score during the Monday (Feb. 10) meet at Washington-Liberty High School in Arlington.

The McLean Highlanders were second at 141.125, with the Oakton Cougars finishing third (138.40) and the Madison Warhawks fourth (137.7).

Less than a week earlier, Oakton nipped Chantilly to win the Concorde District championship.

At the region meet, senior all-around champion Alli Booker led Chantilly. She won the title with a 37.6 point total by fractions over runner-up Skylar Thomas of McLean (37.275).

Booker won the vault (9.675) and uneven bars (9.15), was third on the floor exercise (9.25) and fourth on the balance beam (9.525). She had won the Concorde District all-around a few days earlier.

Chantilly had other big contributors at the region meet.

Sophomore Mazzie Cox scored an 8.9 on the floor, an 8.825 on the bars and an 8.1 on the beam. Junior Adison Zampiello had a 9.0 on the floor, an 8-7 on the vault and an 8.15 on the bars. Freshman Julia Hodinko scored an 8.5 on the vault.

Senior Michaela Turner had an 8.75 on the floor, 8.65 on the vault and 8.225 on the bars.

As for Chantilly juniors, Sabirah Smith Bey had 9.0 on the floor and 8.75 on the beam; Lauren Lattanze scored 8.825 on the beam, 8.7 on the vault and 7.925 on the bars; and Emma Saunders had a 7.95 on the beam.

McLean’s Thomas was second on the beam (9.725), vault (9.5) and bars (9.075) and seventh on the floor (8.975).

Oakton High’s Elissha Chi won the beam (9.75) and was fifth in the all-around (35.65). She was fourth on the vault (9.15).

Marshall High’s Molly Peksens was sixth in the all-around (35.375), Oakton’s Tessa Gay seventh (35.025) and Madison’s Charlotte Feigin eighth (34.25).

Peksens was second on the floor (9.3) and fifth in the beam (9.475). Feigin was fourth on the floor (9.225) and her teammate Lydia Shaw was fifth (9.075). Gay was fifth on the vault (9.1).

Centreville High’s Brandyn Mills was third on the bars (8.975) and Oakton’s Nyla Williams sixth (8.7).

McLean’s Olivia Nguyen was sixth on the vault (9.05).

Westfield High’s Jenna Van Buren had top-10 finishes on the floor and vault.
