Home to dozens of restaurants and shops, Merrifield’s Mosaic District has a potentially exciting year ahead.
A variety of new tenants have already set their sights on the mixed-use neighborhood, while others are still considering one of many storefronts. Here’s a rundown of what to expect at the Mosaic District in the months ahead.
New dining options on the way
A Florida-based donut shop is expecting to open in the retail center “around summer,” a spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow.
The Salty, which was founded in 2014, announced plans for its first Virginia location last summer. It is set to take over the former Loyal Companion storefront, which closed in 2023, at 2905 District Avenue.
The Salty’s menu features a variety of baked goods, highlighted by a variety of donut offerings. While a Merrifield-specific menu has not been announced, many of the brand’s other locations offer homemade pop tarts, cream cheese puffs and much more.
Another chain making its Virginia debut at the Mosaic District, the New York-based cafe Maman, also says it’s slated for a summer opening. The cafe will be located at 2920 District Avenue, Suite 150, the former home of Oath Pizza.
HiFi Tex-Mex BBQ is also targeting an opening early this year, replacing Red Apron at 8298 Glass Alley. After the restaurant hinted on social media that its doors will open “very soon,” partner Greg Engert told FFXnow that HiFi Tex-Mex will have a soft opening at the Mosaic District at 11 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 26).
An official grand opening is scheduled for 11 a.m. this Saturday (March 1).
Also under the umbrella of Neighborhood Restaurant Group, the company behind Red Apron, HiFi can currently be found in Alexandria and offers traditional barbecue fare with a Tex-Mex influence, seen in options like green chili mac, fried plaintains and loaded yuca fries.
Hawkers, an Asian street food chain, confirmed in 2023 that it’s coming to the retail center, taking the spot long occupied by Four Sisters. Signs advertising that the restaurant is “coming soon” have since been posted around the storefront, but a spokesperson hasn’t responded to inquiries about a possible opening time frame.
Popular workplace furniture brand moving in

Signage has appeared outside of a storefront at 2921 District Avenue announcing future tenant Herman Miller, a furniture company perhaps most known for its office furniture.
The new store, which will neighbor Madison Reed Color Bar, is targeting a spring 2025 opening.
Initially founded in 1923 as the Michigan Star Furniture Company, Herman Miller sells a variety of seating, desks, tables and more.
Parc de Ville’s temporary closure

After closing for renovations last year, Parc de Ville may be gearing up to reopen in the coming weeks.
The restaurant’s Yelp page, which is moderated by a confirmed representative of the restaurant, lists a reopening scheduled for March 2.
However, the French restaurant no longer appears on the shopping center’s website. When asked about the omission, a spokesperson for Edens, the developer that owns and manages most of the Mosaic District, said it was an “oversight,” but as of press time, Parc de Ville still isn’t listed.
It is unclear what renovations are being completed as no construction permits have been issued for the restaurant’s space at 8296 Glass Alley, according to the county’s permitting portal.
A request for clarification sent to representatives of the French restaurant went unanswered.
‘Full service health club’ eyes Custom Ink space
As Custom Ink prepares to vacate its space at the Mosaic District, one company is looking to confirm that it can renovate and move into the space.
The Washington Business Journal first reported last month that Onelife Fitness submitted a zoning verification letter to Fairfax County officials, seeking to clarify whether the space can accommodate a “full service health club with pool, kids club and studios.”
Custom Ink, which had administrative offices on three non-ground floors at 2910 District Avenue, intends to vacate the space by the time its lease expires on March 31, according to the WBJ.
According to the Jan. 28 request, which is still being reviewed by county staff, the envisioned fitness center will be over 30,000 square foot in size with three swimming pools. The anticipated hours of operation are 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and Sunday.
Onelife Fitness operates 27 locations across Virginia, including ones nearby in Burke, McLean, Reston, Legato and Falls Church.
