One of the world’s biggest burger chains is planning to set up shop in Springfield Town Center.
Representatives for Burger King requested three building permits for a space inside the mall earlier this month, according to Fairfax County’s permitting portal.
Two of the requested permits have been issued, but as of press time, the permit required for construction has not, with electrical and health department reviews still in progress.
Burger King’s public relations team confirmed to FFXnow that the chain will open a restaurant at Springfield Town Center “sometime this year.”
According to a spokesperson for the mall, the restaurant is currently expected to open in June next to Popeye’s in the mall’s first-floor food court.
Burger King appears to be taking the spot currently occupied by Jammin Island BBQ, which remains open.
Founded in 1954, Burger King has become one of the world’s most popular fast food options. Long a competitor of McDonald’s, Wendy’s and other burger chains, Burger King offers a “commitment to premium ingredients, signature recipes, and family-friendly dining experiences,” according to its website.
Burger King has one existing location in Springfield — a freestanding, drive-thru site in Backlick Plaza — as well as a storefront in nearby Kingstowne Towne Center.
Springfield Town Center currently offers 26 places to eat, ranging from quick service to dine-in.
In addition to Burger King, four other retailers are listed as “coming soon” on the mall’s website: Kelly’s Cajun Grill, Starbucks, Suki Hana Japan and Wok-A-Holic.
