A tanker truck is leaking gas into Difficult Run in Great Falls after crashing on a bridge over the stream early this morning (Thursday).
Fairfax County police and units from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to Leigh Mill Road at Kelso Road around 3:07 a.m. for a truck carrying “hazardous materials” that crashed on the bridge, according to scanner traffic.
“They advised it’s a mixture of 1,000 gallons of diesel, 7,500 of regular gasoline,” a dispatcher told responding fire units, citing a 911 caller. “Got caught on the guardrail and ripped the whole bottom of the truck off. The leak is going into the water.”
Per the scanner, no injuries were reported, and there was “no structural damage” to the bridge aside from the rupture in the guardrail.
According to the FCFRD, the incident has required closures of nearby roads:
- Leigh Mill Road at White Chimney Lane to Leigh Mill Court
- Old Dominion Rd between Towlston and Falls Run Road
- Kelso Road from Leigh Mill Road to Brian Jack Lane
By 5:10 a.m., responders were able to deploy booms in Difficult Run in an effort to contain the gas leak, per the scanner.
“Units will be on scene for an extended period of time,” the fire department said at 6:19 a.m. “Residents may also smell gas for several days along Difficult Run.”
This has resulted in several road closures. Please seek alternative routes:
