Celebration planned for Idylwood’s recently finished Ruckstuhl Park

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) plans to throw a party next month celebrating the latest addition to its system.

After more than a year of construction, the trails, play area and fitness zone at Idylwood’s new Ruckstuhl Park are now open to community members.

The park became accessible as soon as the construction barriers were lifted late last year, but the park authority opted to wait for warmer weather for a formal opening ceremony.

That time is now on the horizon, with a ribbon-cutting scheduled for May 17 at 10 a.m. The event is expected to feature “a short speaking program” with local officials, along with “about an hour of activities” led by the FCPA’s Wonder Wagon team.

Rolled out last April, the mobile nature center brings environmental and educational programs to local parks and schools with a particular focus on “underserved areas.”

More details of the planned Ruckstuhl Park ceremony will be released closer to the event.

“We’re looking forward to a great event,” FCPA Marketing and Communications Division Director Daidria Grayson said.

Located at 7545 Idylwood Road, Ruckstuhl Park occupies approximately 7.2 acres of a former residential property that belonged to Dr. Lillian Ruckstuhl. When she died in 2008, the doctor bequeathed the land to the Northern Virginia Conservation Trust so it could be preserved, ideally for a public park.

Efforts to fulfill Ruckstuhl’s wishes began when the FCPA acquired the land for $250,000 in 2011 under the condition that it be placed in a conservation easement prohibiting athletic fields, among other uses.

The park authority initiated a master planning process in 2014 that resulted in a vision for a future local park that could both “preserve a sense of the open landscape” and offer “low impact community recreation opportunities.”

After voters approved approximately $2.5 million to fund the park as part of a 2020 bond referendum, the FCPA board finalized a project scope in December 2022. Planned amenities included a picnic pavilion, an open play area, an ADA-compliant loop trail, a nature-themed playground, fitness equipment and a parking lot.

Contractor TMG Construction began working on the site in July 2024, and final construction on the parking lot and landscaping wrapped up in December.

This story was updated to correct the spelling of the park’s name and the address for its entrance.
