The Town of Herndon Police Department (HPD) wants to expedite its response to parking violations on local streets.
A new online portal launched today (Tuesday) allows residents, businesses and other community members to report parking complaints directly to the department’s traffic unit, which enforces traffic laws and parking rules in addition to investigating crashes and assisting with traffic studies.
The HPD developed the online portal in an effort to “streamline the process” for handling complaints and “make it easier for members of the community,” spokesperson Lisa Herndon told FFXnow.
“Previously, if a resident or business wanted to file a non-exigent parking complaint, they would call dispatch and be routed to the voicemail of our Parking Enforcement Officer,” Herndon explained. “With this new process, the online form goes directly into the email inboxes of the members of our Traffic Unit, which includes the Parking Enforcement Officer.”

Parking has been a persistent challenge for the town over the past decade, with police and elected officials fielding complaints about parked vehicles crowding residential streets and blocking driveways.
The Herndon Town Council adopted an extensive update of the town’s parking ordinance in January 2022 that, among other changes, limited larger vehicles to two hours of parking in residential neighborhoods, imposed $50 fines for blocking a curb ramp or parking within 5 feet of a driveway, and prohibited recreational vehicles from parking on a residential street for more than 72 hours.
The town also has a residential permit parking program that allows neighborhoods to petition for restrictions on parking by people who don’t live on the affected street.
While unrelated to the town-wide parking issues, the HPD switched to electronic parking tickets in 2022, a transition it said would save officers time compared to handwritten notices and automatically import relevant information to its computer system.
Parking tickets issued in Herndon can be paid online. Drivers have a 30-day deadline to pay or appeal their citation by visiting the Herndon Municipal Center (777 Lynn Street) and requesting a court date.
