Hayfield Shopping Center welcomes authentic Mexican taqueria

Hungry customers seeking the flavors of Mexico have a new spot to try in Kingstowne’s Hayfield Shopping Center.

El Fogon Taqueria officially opened its doors in the shopping center this spring with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 8, replacing the former Kochix restaurant at 7554 Telegraph Road.

The restaurant specializes in Mexican street tacos with “bold, traditional flavors,” according to a press release from the Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

El Fogon’s menu features a total of 13 different tacos to choose from. Two of them are vegetarian options: the mushroom-based “Wild Thing” and one that contains grilled vegetables.

The restaurant, a joint endeavor by chef Jorge Contreras and business partner Andy Ayala, also offers burritos, bowls, tortas, fajitas and more.

“We’re thrilled to support Chef Jorge and Andy in launching El Fogón,” Mount Vernon Springfield Chamber of Commerce board member Michael Drobnis said in the release. “Small businesses like theirs are the heart of our local economy and culture.”

El Fogon joins a handful of other restaurants at the shopping center, including Subway and McDonald’s, though it is the only option for Latin cuisine.

The restaurant is open daily, though the restaurant’s hours vary. Diners can eat starting between 10 or 10:30 a.m. before the restaurant closes anywhere between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., depending on the day.

The chamber of commerce says it also welcomed three other new members in April: 1-800-Plumber +Air, which offers plumbing and HVAC services; the real estate title and settlement firm MBH Settlement Group Kingstowne; and Mobility City Alexandria, which sells, rents and repairs wheelchairs, scooters and other mobility equipment.

“As the Chamber continues its mission to promote a strong local economy, we are proud to welcome these new members and recognize the vital role they play in serving our community and supporting local jobs,” the chamber said.
