Fairfax County will expand its speed camera program to 10 more public schools this summer, several months after it announced plans to install the devices.

After giving the public notice on Monday (June 2), the county will roll out the new cameras in two batches, starting with three cameras in early July. Another seven cameras will come online in mid-August before the next school year gets underway.

A warning period for the first three cameras is scheduled to begin on July 2, giving drivers more than a month to change their behavior before they start facing fines on Aug. 18.

  • Cardinal Forest Elementary School: Forrester Blvd in West Springfield
  • Mount Vernon High School and Riverside Elementary School: Old Mount Vernon Road
  • Belvedere Elementary School: Columbia Road in Annandale

The next set of cameras will start operations on Aug. 18, allowing for a 30-day warning period before fines come into play on Sept. 17.

  • Chantilly High School: Stringfellow Road
  • Edison High School: Franconia Road in Rose Hill
  • South Lakes High School, Langston Hughes Middle School and Terraset Elementary School: South Lakes Drive in Reston
  • Marshall High School: Leesburg Pike in Idylwood
  • McLean High School: Westmoreland Street
  • Robinson Secondary School and Oak View Elementary School: Sideburn Road in Kings Park West
  • Stone Middle School: Braddock Road in Centreville

Under the county’s speed camera program, which launched with a pilot in February 2023, citations come with fines of up to $100 and are issued to drivers who exceed the 25-mph speed limit for school zones by 10 mph or more.

Fairfax County currently has nine school zones with speed cameras. It will introduce cameras to a construction work zone for the first time later this month, kicking off a 30-day warning period for drivers on Fairfax County Parkway between Popes Head Road and Burke Center Parkway on June 15.

The county originally expected to add cameras at the 10 aforementioned schools last year, unveiling plans last August to install as many as 50 additional cameras by the end of 2025.

However, the rollout stalled due to a need to work out some “details” with the Virginia Department of Transportation, a county spokesperson told FFXnow in May.

Fairfax County now says the first phase of its program will bring a total of 50 new cameras, including the 10 that have been announced, by June 30, 2026, when fiscal year 2026 ends. A second expansion with 30 cameras is planned for fiscal year 2027.

According to the county’s website, the next 10 locations currently slated to get speed cameras are:

  • Bonnie Brae Elementary School (5420 Sideburn Road, Fairfax)
  • Coates Elementary School (2480 River Birch Road, Herndon)
  • Hayfield Secondary School and Hayfield Elementary School (7630 and 7633 Telegraph Road, Alexandria)
