A man has been charged with attempted abduction after police say he tried to lure a child who was waiting for a school bus.

Hugo Perez Soliz, 45, allegedly drove up to the child near Wadsworth Court and Little River Turnpike in yesterday (Tuesday) morning and “attempted to persuade the child” to get into his black Subaru sedan, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

“The child ran to a trusted adult near the bus stop, who took a picture of the vehicle before it left the area,” the FCPD said in a press release. “The victim was able to safely board the bus and report the incident to a school official later in the day.”

The school official notified police, who responded to the 3400 block of Hemlock Drive at 8:48 a.m. yesterday for the suspicious person report. While the FCPD didn’t identify the school, the address suggests it was Woodburn Elementary School (3401 Hemlock Drive).

With help from the photo that the adult took of the vehicle and the department’s Real Time Crime Center, patrol officers and detectives found security footage of the incident and identified Perez Soliz as their suspect, according to the FCPD.

He was arrested and transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he remains in custody without bond. He has been charged with one count of attempted abduction of a minor, which is classified as a Class 4 felony in Virginia punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for July 8 at 1:30 p.m., according to online Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court records.

In its press release, the FCPD identifies Perez Soliz as an Annandale resident, but court records list his address as being in the Newington Forest or South Run area south of Springfield.
