Three people were hospitalized earlier this afternoon (Wednesday) after a building under construction in Merrifield collapsed.
Fairfax County and Fairfax City firefighters were dispatched to the site in the 3000 block of Cedar Lane north of Route 50 (Arlington Blvd) around 1:18 p.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt says.
Responders described the incident as a “cave-in.” Two people were reportedly found under the collapsed building, including one person who was unconscious, but by 1:23 p.m., they were “no longer under the structure,” according to scanner traffic.
One construction worker had to be rescued after getting stranded on the collapsed building’s roof, per the scanner.
“Crews & FCFRD Technical Rescue Operations Team worked to assess scene & assist workers,” the FCFRD said in a social media update at 3:35 p.m.
According to Hildebrandt, three people suffered injuries that “appeared non-life-threatening,” but they were taken to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
