A man has been arrested for a home burglary in the Fair Oaks area that appears to be connected to an armed robbery at a Tysons parking garage.

Police officers were first dispatched to the office building at 8605 Westwood Center Drive around 9:07 a.m. on Wednesday (July 23) for a reported robbery, according to scanner traffic.

“The victim reported she was walking in the parking garage when a masked suspect approached her with a rifle, grabbed her, and stole her phone,” the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release today (Friday). “The victim escaped and the suspect fled prior to officers’ arrival.”

The woman’s boyfriend made the initial 911 report after getting a call from his girlfriend and overhearing a man “demanding her phone,” a dispatcher said on the scanner.

Upon arriving at Westwood Center around 9:25 a.m., the boyfriend got a mobile alert from his home security system showing someone “trying to break into his house” in the 4500 block of Plateau Drive in the Fair Oaks area.

Officers dispatched to the West Oaks Corner townhomes “confirmed that the home was burglarized and items were stolen,” police said.

According to the FCPD, detectives identified the man allegedly seen burglarizing the West Oaks townhome as Mohammad Asif, a 36-year-old man from California. He was located in a nearby home with the help from the department’s Fugitive Tracking and Apprehension Unit and taken into custody.

Asif has been charged with burglary, two counts of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit robbery, and conspiracy in the use of a firearm to commit a felony.

Following an arraignment yesterday (Thursday), Asif remains in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond. He’s next scheduled to appear in Fairfax County General District Court on Monday (July 28) for an attorney review hearing, followed by a preliminary hearing on Oct. 21.

Police believe the incidents were coordinated, but they’re still looking to identify the alleged robber in Tysons.

“This incident does not appear to be a random act,” the FCPD said.
