A man died over the weekend after crashing while riding an electric skateboard on Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) in Oakton, police say.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, its officers were dispatched to the Chain Bridge and Hibbard Street intersection at 2:51 p.m. on Saturday (Aug. 2) after receiving “a report of an accident involving a motorized skateboard.”
“When officers arrived, they located an adult male who had fallen off the skateboard and suffered injuries to his upper body,” the FCPD said. “The man was transported to the hospital in life threatening condition and was later pronounced deceased.”
The exact circumstances of the crash are unclear, but no vehicles were involved, an FCPD spokesperson confirmed. The incident was described as a “cardiac arrest” in the 2:52 p.m. dispatch to emergency medical services, according to scanner traffic.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved funding in March for a study of the Chain Bridge Road corridor in Oakton after residents voiced concerns about potential development exacerbating existing traffic congestion and safety issues.
Two people, one of them a pedestrian, were killed in crashes last year at the nearby Hunter Mill Road and Lynnhaven Place intersection outside the Oakton Shopping Center.
In Virginia, electric or motorized skateboards, like electric bicycles and scooters, are allowed on sidewalks and shared-use paths, but localities have the authority to pass ordinances banning them from designated sidewalks and crosswalks if they choose.
