JUST IN: Pedestrian dies after being struck by hit-and-run driver, police on Route 1

A woman was killed in Hybla Valley last night (Tuesday) after being struck by both a hit-and-run driver and a responding police officer, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

Trina Jones, a 62-year-old Alexandria resident, was crossing Richmond Highway at Belford Drive, just outside the Mount Vernon Crossroads shopping center, when a southbound sedan driver hit her, police say.

One of the officers who responded to the scene around 8:39 p.m. then hit Jones while driving in their marked police cruiser, according to the FCPD.

Medics with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department attempted life-saving measures, but Jones was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Based on a witness report, the FCPD believes the driver was in a 2016 black Mercedes C300 and fled the scene by continuing southbound on Richmond Highway. An image of the vehicle has been obtained by detectives.

In addition to searching for the driver, police have opened criminal and administrative investigations into the officer who struck Jones.

“The officer involved in the crash has been identified as a 2-year veteran assigned to the Mount Vernon Patrol District,” the FCPD said in a press release this afternoon (Wednesday). “As per department policy, the officer has been placed on restricted duty status pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The criminal investigation is being conducted by the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau, which will later present its results to Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s office. The administrative review is being handled by internal affairs.

Per preliminary state data, Jones is the seventh pedestrian to be killed in a crash in Fairfax County so far this year and the second involved specifically in a hit-and-run incident on Richmond Highway.

In April, the FCPD arrested and charged a man who had fled the scene after striking a woman and her son while they were crossing Route 1 near Buckman Road in Hybla Valley. The child survived the Jan. 29 crash, but 33-year-old Erica Tibbs died from her injuries.
