For the next week, desserts will be a force for good at several restaurants and bakeries in Fairfax County.
Tatte, Bourbon Boulevard and other local establishments are participating in this year’s Bakes for Breast Cancer, an annual fundraiser that encourages bakers to donate proceeds from their dessert sales to support breast cancer research.
The Fairfax County businesses involved in the Virginia fundraiser, which will start tomorrow (Friday) and continue through next Thursday, Oct. 23, are:
- AKB at Archer Hotel (Tysons): donating 50% of proceeds from all dessert sales
- Bourbon Boulevard (Chantilly)
- Guapo’s (Herndon, Merrifield and Fair Lakes): donating all proceeds from strawberry tres leches sales
- Tatte (Reston): donating proceeds from Linzer cookie sales
A full list of the participants can be found on the Bakes for Breast Cancer website.
A nonprofit that gives money to help oncologists research breast cancer, Bakes for Breast Cancer was founded in 1999 by Carol Sneider in honor of her mother, who died from the disease.
Over the past 26 years, the organization has raised over $2 million for the cause with the support of over 5,000 different restaurants, bakeries, cafes and other businesses that have participated.
For 2025, fundraisers are planned throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic region, with Maryland and D.C. businesses also participating during the week of Oct. 17-23.
“We are proud to keep expanding into different states and marquee cities, and we will continue to do so in areas with thriving culinary scenes with establishments that share the same mission as ours,” Sneider said. “Statistics on both women and men directly and indirectly affected by breast cancer are alarming, and we will continue do our best to help reduce those numbers.”
Breast cancer is the second-most common type of cancer for women in the U.S., surpassed only by skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society, which estimates that around 42,170 women and 510 men will die from the disease this year.
