UPDATED: New Aldi store in Springfield set to open next month

Discount grocery retailer Aldi plans to open its newest Fairfax County supermarket later this year.

The forthcoming grocery store will officially open its doors at 6230 Rolling Road in the West Springfield Shopping Mall on Thursday, Dec. 4, Aldi announced on Nov. 19.

According to the company’s website, which initially displayed an opening date of Nov. 20, a “sneak peek” of the West Springfield store will be offered a day early on Dec. 3.

“The grand opening for our new grocery store in West Springfield is right around the corner, and so are your savings,” the website reads. “We’ve got everything from fresh produce delivered daily to everyday essentials you can never have enough of.”

A slate of promotions will commemorate the grand opening. The first 100 shoppers in line when the doors open will receive not only a bag of assorted Aldi goodies, but also a golden ticket that could be worth up to $100, according to the website.

Patrons who aren’t among the first 100 could still snag a free tote bag as long as they are available, and an online sweepstakes for a $500 gift card will be held from Dec. 4-7.

Doors will open as soon as a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 9 a.m. concludes.

The store will be the brand’s 10th in Fairfax County, keeping Aldi’s local presence just shy of rival German discount supermarket chain Lidl.

Like Lidl, Aldi, which has been in the U.S. since 1976, emphasizes the idea of savings through a variety of methods, including a limited supply of name-brand goods and the need for customers to bring their own bags.

Despite that, Aldi has become a popular shopping influence due to the small size of its retail stores and small selection for individual items. The company is aiming to open 800 stores in the U.S. by the end of 2028, according to a press release.

“At our new West Springfield Aldi store, shoppers will find that every decision we make, from our product selection to store layout, is to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest possible prices of any national grocer,” Aldi Regional Vice President Kelly Brennan said in the release. “… As shoppers look for better ways to stretch their dollar, Aldi is providing West Springfield with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices.”

The West Springfield store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
