Students and staff at Brookfield Elementary School in Chantilly have been evacuated in response to a gas leak.

Units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the school at 4200 Lees Corner Road around 10:18 a.m. for a “hazardous material emergency,” according to scanner traffic.

Construction workers in the area estimated that they hit a 6-inch gas line but were “not a hundred percent sure,” a firefighter reported around 10:23 a.m.

No injuries have been reported, but as of 1 p.m., Lees Corner Road remains closed between Pennsboro and Tabscott drives, the fire department said on social media.

Firefighters, a hazmat crew and workers with Washington Gas are expected to remain at the scene for an “undetermined amount of time” to address the leak.

“Third party damage was the cause,” Washington Gas spokesperson Andre Francis said at 2:21 p.m. when asked about the leak. “We don’t have an estimated time for repairs to be completed but a crew is currently working it.”

A Fairfax County Public Schools spokesperson told WUSA9 that students were relocated to another school until the situation is resolved.
