A two-alarm fire that engulfed a single-family house in the Kings Park West neighborhood last weekend has become fatal.
One resident who suffered injuries from the fire early Saturday morning (Nov. 29) has died, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) announced yesterday (Monday). Three other people, including one firefighter, were also hospitalized.
Firefighters were initially dispatched around 1:46 a.m. to the 5400 block of Guinea Road after a caller reported that “flames are spreading throughout the whole entire house,” according to scanner traffic.
“We do have the occupants on the line. They’re advising they’re unable to get out of the house,” the dispatcher said.
Upon arriving, firefighters reported “one occupant hanging out the window” from the house’s top floor.
According to NBC4, a neighbor who tried to alert the home’s residents to the fire encountered a couple who exited from a side door, but an older woman appeared trapped upstairs and had to be evacuated via a ladder.
Per scanner traffic, a 59-year-old woman was transported to the burn center at MedStar Washington Hospital in D.C. Another person — described as an older adult man — was rescued by firefighters and taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital after going into cardiac arrest.
The person who experienced cardiac arrest later died, FCFRD spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt says.
The injuries experienced by the firefighter and two other hospitalized residents were believed to be non-life-threatening. Hildebrandt said they were unable to provide updates on those individuals’ conditions due to medical privacy concerns.
A total of 45 different units were ultimately sent to the fire, with the City of Fairfax Fire Department providing assistance, FCFRD said.
“Fire investigators continue to work to determine the cause and origin of the fire,” the county fire department said.
