One person has died and three other people were injured Monday morning (Dec. 15) in a crash involving a taxi, a Metrobus and a van on Richmond Highway in Groveton.

Police received multiple calls reporting a crash in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway shortly after 10 a.m., Fairfax County Police Department Capt. Jesse Katzman said in a media update around 1 p.m.

Video captured by a rear-facing camera on the bus suggests the taxicab was traveling “at a very high rate of speed” when it crashed into a 2014 Toyota Sienna van, which in turn rear-ended the bus, Katzman said. The bus and van were stopped at a traffic light at the time of the crash.

The taxi driver, a 67-year-old man from Alexandria, has been declared dead, and three people in the van have been taken to a local hospital.

Injuries to the adult male van driver were described by police as non-life-threatening, but two passengers — an adult woman and another adult man — were still hospitalized after sustaining life-threatening injuries, as of Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 16), according to a press release from the FCPD.

Five people, including the driver, were on the bus when the crash occurred, but none of them have reported any injuries. The bus was traveling on Route F1X, which provides express service from King Street in Alexandria to Fort Belvoir.

“All of that information is preliminary, but I think it provides a pretty good overview of what we think happened,” Katzman said, adding that police currently “don’t have any evidence of anything out of the ordinary other than the driving behavior of the taxi.”

Northbound Richmond Highway was closed between Beacon Hill Road and North Kings Highway as detectives investigate. The Virginia Department of Transportation advises drivers to find “alternate routes.”

Detectives are canvassing the area to determine whether any other surveillance footage of the crash is available, and police hope to interview the van and bus occupants, who were all adults. The Metro Transit Police Department is assisting with the investigation.

According to the FCPD, detectives are still confirming whether speed was a factor in the crash, but alcohol doesn’t appear to have been involved.

“Any time we have a loss of life, it’s extremely tragic, and in this case, there was significant damage to both the van and to the taxi, so it’s definitely a traumatic accident for sure,” Katzman said.
