Fairfax County government offices and schools will remain closed tomorrow (Tuesday), as work continues to clean up roads after yesterday’s Winter Storm Fern.
In addition to closing schools for a second day, Fairfax County Public Schools is canceling all activities on school grounds, including extracurricular programs, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, and adult education classes.
School Age Child Care (SACC) and Beyond the Bell (BTB) centers will be closed as well.
“In accordance with Regulation 4810, employees designated as essential personnel should follow supervisor direction,” FCPS said. “Emergency administrative leave is authorized for all other personnel. Additional updates will be available on the FCPS website and the FCPS mobile app.”
If the snow-related closures extend to Wednesday (Jan. 28), FCPS students will have an entire week off. Classes were already scheduled to end two hours early on Wednesday to mark the end of the year’s second quarter, and Thursday and Friday are designated as staff planning and development days.
Other facilities affected by the county government closure include all courts — further delaying Brendan Banfield’s ongoing double murder trial and other cases — as well as Fairfax County Public Library branches and public health centers.
“Emergency administrative leave is granted for county employees not designated as emergency personnel,” the county said. “Emergency personnel should report as scheduled.”

The Fairfax County Park Authority announced at 5 p.m. that its facilities will also remain closed tomorrow, including all parks, recreation centers, golf courses and historic sites. Programs and events have been canceled.
In an update at 1 p.m., the agency warned visitors from parking near Burke Lake Park, even though the popular sledding destination “may look like a winter wonderland.”
“Please do not park in front of park gates or block entrances,” the park authority said. “[It] is not safe and slows down the work of our park operations crew who are working tirelessly to clear paths for everyone. Let’s look out for one another and be mindful. Thanks for your patience and cooperation.”

After suspending service since 9 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 24), Fairfax Connector will resume operations tomorrow, providing limited Sunday service on select routes with snow detours. The bus system’s stores will still be closed, and service may change based on the current road conditions.
Vienna, Fairfax City cancel council meetings
Though they haven’t indicated yet whether offices will be open tomorrow, Vienna and Fairfax City have both canceled scheduled meetings of their respective councils.
The Vienna Town Council was slated to meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Monday) to discuss its priorities for 2026, a timeline for the aquatic and fitness center project, and amendments to its zoning ordinance, among other topics. A public hearing on the zoning changes has now been postponed to Feb. 23.
As of this morning, the town’s public works crews and contractors were still plowing secondary roads, while parks staff worked to clear sidewalks near town-owned buildings.

The Fairfax City Council has already nixed its meeting planned for tomorrow night. A scheduled public hearing on the city’s proposed Urban Forest Master Plan has been moved to the council’s next regular meeting on Feb. 10.
Fairfax City has also canceled trash and recycling collection through Tuesday, requiring those residents to wait until next week for pickups.
The Town of Herndon, on the other hand, will open its offices during regular business hours tomorrow, though employees will be granted “liberal leave” throughout the day. Tuesday recycling collections have still been canceled.
