Mod Pizza to close in Greenbriar Town Center

After eight years of operating in Fairfax, Mod Pizza will close its location in Greenbriar Town Center near Chantilly.

“We sincerely thank our past and present Squad members for their dedication, as well as the Fairfax community for its loyal support over the years,” a spokesperson said in a statement to FFXnow.

The fast-casual pizza chain, which was founded in Seattle in 2008, said in the statement that the landlord chose not to renew its lease for 13061 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway, Suite S. The location’s last day of business will be May 31.

The company said it “prioritized our people throughout the transition,” and is offering all impacted workers the opportunity to transfer to another site.

Mod Pizza has downsized its presence in Northern Virginia in recent years, including locations in Herndon, Vienna, Ashburn and Fairfax City. It still operates locations in Reston at Plaza America, Woodbridge, and Gainesville.

“MOD remains focused on delivering the best possible experience for our Squad members, guests and communities,” the statement says.

Talkin’ Tacos, a Florida-based chain that specializes in food such as birria tacos and halal meat, has filed a building permit with Fairfax County for the space currently occupied by Mod.

The permit seeks to modify the cooking space and make changes to the plumbing, interior, and electric inside the 2,992 square foot space. The permit also calls for changes to the interior and new signage.

Talkin’ Tacos did not respond to requests for comment on its plans for the location, which would be its first in Virginia but not in the D.C. area.

In addition to its restaurants in Florida, North Carolina, Georgia, New York, and Texas, Talkin’ Tacos operates a site at 1800 M Street MW in the District. According to the Washington Business Journal, it recently signed a lease for a second D.C. location near Logan Circle.

An article by Nation’s Restaurant News says the company started out as a food truck run by two childhood friends in 2020 before growing into a multi-state franchise.

In the coming months, Greenbriar Town Center is also expected to welcome a new location for Meokja Meokja, a Korean BBQ restaurant in Fairfax City. Construction on the building is underway.
