Fairfax County police are investigating a fight at the South Lakes Village Center in Reston that ended with one teen in the hospital.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 2 p.m. on Friday (March 27) to the Sunoco gas station at 11190 South Lakes Drive for an incident initially reported as a stabbing, according to the police scanner.

Upon arriving, police encountered “a large group of teens” engaged in a fight in the shopping center.

“One juvenile male was assaulted and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the Fairfax County Police Department said on social media at 2:41 p.m.

Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives determined that one of the teens involved in the “altercation” had pulled out a knife and stabbed the boy who was hospitalized in his lower body,” the FCPD said in a March 30 update.

With help from drones, a helicopter and the department’s Real Time Crime Center, which can access traffic cameras and other surveillance footage, police identified a teen suspect who was taken into custody later in the day on Friday.

“The juvenile was charged with Malicious Wounding and is currently being held at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center,” the FCPD said.

In Virginia, malicious wounding is a Class 3 felony punishable with five to 20 years of prison time and a fine of up to $100,000 if there’s a conviction.
