The Red Bird is now serving up six tiers of hot chicken in Reston.

The halal hot chicken chain has joined the roster of restaurants in South Lakes Village Center (11120 South Lakes Drive) after opening its first Northern Virginia franchise location in Vienna five months ago.

The Red Bird did not respond to a request for comment by press time. The company has previously said it also has plans to open in Arlington, Falls Church and Ashburn.

The Reston location is currently open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., while the Vienna spot (282 Cedar Lane) is open until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday (and until 9 p.m. on Sunday).

The chicken sandwiches and tenders range from mild to extra hot and comes with a three-inch potato roll.

The chain aims to serve a range of diners, from a college student to a “big-time baller,” per its website. Its sandwich is priced at $4.99, and a single tender goes for $3.29.

Hot chicken, which was first popular in Black communities in Nashville, has seen increased prevalence in recent years.

South Lakes Village Center also features Mediterranean bistro Cafesano, Lakeside Asia Cafe, Red’s Table and a Chipotle. The Red Bird was expected to open in February, per the shopping center’s Facebook page.

South Lakes Village Center is also in the midst of a spring concert series. This Saturday (April 20), acoustic duo Duck Chuck Goose will perform from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The trend of hot chicken continues to spread its wings in the area with the coming of another restaurant.

The Red Bird is set to open at South Lakes Village Center, according to signage posted at the Reston shopping center.

The company did not immediately return a request for comment from FFXnow on when the new restaurant is expected to open.

The Reston location will be The Red Bird’s second permanent restaurant in Northern Virginia. A location in Vienna is expected to open this year, FFXnow previously reported. The company previously operated out of a ghost kitchen and held several pop-ups in Virginia and D.C.

Other hot chicken spots in the area include Roaming Rooster, Hangry Joe’s Hot Chicken and Dave’s Hot Chicken.

At The Red Bird, spice levels range from hot to the highest spiace level “Fck You Cra.” The company’s chicken tenders are marinated in a Red’s chicken rub and dipped in homemade breading. A final red rub is then dusted over the cooked chicken. Other items on the menu include chicken bowls and fries.

The Red Bird is negotiating leases for locations in Falls Church, Ashburn and Arlington.

Plans to convert a drive-thru bank into a fast food restaurant in Reston’s South Lakes Village Center are on hold.

At a June 21 meeting, the Fairfax County Planning Commission plans to indefinitely defer the application, which would have converted the bank into drive-thru restaurant.

The applicant had hoped to convert the 1,675-square-foot space into a fast-food restaurant.

“The establishment of a fast-food restaurant at this location complements existing uses, including those of other fast-food businesses in the village center,” the special exception application said.

Most recently updated in February, the application said South Lakes Village Center had hoped to maintain the structure of the building and “broaden the retail options” available to area residents.

The shopping center is anchored by Safeway and includes tenants like Starbucks, Chipotle, Red’s Table, Custom Ink and Truist.

South Lakes Village Center did not immediately return a request for comment from FFXnow. A Fairfax County spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow that the applicant asked for the deferral.

A new hair salon is opening this weekend at Reston’s South Lakes Village Center.

Great Clips will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. with $7.99 haircuts.

Located at 11130 South Lakes Drive in Suite E, the salon will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

A new future could be in store for a drive-in bank at South Lakes Village Center in Reston.

The owner of the nearly 10-acre retail center is seeking the county’s permission to convert a drive-thru bank on the property into a drive-thru fast food restaurant, according to a June 15 application.

“By converting this site into a fast-food restaurant, the applicant seeks to maintain the structure of the building and ensure that the building remains a vital component of the South Lakes Village Center,” the application says.

But the application does not disclose the future tenant, which would be located at 11120 South Lakes Drive. Materials simply note that the existing building will “support a new restaurant tenant while carefully fitting into the surrounding context of the existing South Lakes Village Center.”

The 1,675-square-foot-space was previously occupied by a drive-thru bank. The interior of the space will be repurposed for restaurant use, but the tenant will use most of the previous bank’s sidewalks, landscaping, utilities, drive-thru and parking areas.

South Lakes Village Center and the Chevy Chase Land Company did not return a request for comment from FFXnow. The center is anchored by Safeway and includes tenants like Starbucks, Chipotle, Red’s Table, Custom Ink and Truist.

A hair salon is slated to arrive at South Lakes Village Center.

Great Clips is set to take over space formerly occupied by Hair Cuttery, according to county permits.

The business did not immediately comment on when it plans to open up shop, but the county’s permit database indicates that an application for minor interior alterations was processed earlier this month. It’ll be located at 11120 South Lakes Drive, Suite E.

The salon joins a village center with other businesses like Custom Ink, Starbucks, Red’s Table, Cafesano, and Chipotle. The center is anchored by Safeway.

Great Clips has other locations across the country and several in the Northern Virginia area, including in Sterling and Ashburn.
