Second fatal pedestrian crash on Richmond Highway in 2026 under investigation

For the second time this year, a pedestrian has died in a crash on the Fairfax County section of Richmond Highway (Route 1).

Police responded at 10:30 p.m. on Friday (April 3) to Richmond Highway’s intersection with Pohick Road and Backlick Road in Fort Belvoir after receiving a report of a crash involving a pedestrian.

The pedestrian — identified as Anthony Williams, 67, of Maryland — appears to have been crossing Richmond Highway from west to east in the intersection when the northbound driver of a Toyota Tacoma struck him, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Williams was taken to a hospital where he later died from life-threatening injuries.

The Toyota driver remained at the scene and didn’t experience any injuries, police say. Northbound Richmond Highway was temporarily blocked while detectives investigated the crash.

“Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors for the driver,” the FCPD said when announcing Williams’s death on Saturday (April 4). “Alcohol remains under investigation for the pedestrian.”

Williams is the second pedestrian to be killed on Richmond Highway this year after 34-year-old Demarko Shamsiddin died in a hit-and-run crash at Mount Eagle Drive in Huntington on Jan. 7. That already matches the total number of such fatalities seen in 2025 on the busy roadway, which spans three travel lanes in each direction at the Pohick/Backlick intersection.

Countywide, Fairfax County has now seen 12 people killed in crashes in 2026, including five pedestrians. In addition to the two Richmond Highway incidents, a man was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing Little River Turnpike in Annandale in January, and a woman died in late February after she was struck by a BMW driver on John Marr Drive, also in Annandale.

A driver who was killed in a crash that happened on Feb. 11 while he was arguing with another driver on I-95 is also counted as a pedestrian by police.
