Motorists should plan for impacts as City of Fairfax officials launch a 10-week roadbed reconstruction project along Fairfax Blvd beginning Thursday, April 10.
Virginia Paving will repave all six lanes of the key east-west roadway from Draper Drive to Fairfax Circle as part of the $1.73 million project.
The right two lanes of eastbound Fairfax Blvd will be closed at Draper Drive from 11 p.m. Friday, April 10, to 5 a.m. Monday, April 13, in support of the work. Motorists can use the left lane during that period, but should expect delays and consider alternate routes.
The work is necessary to extend the roadway’s usable life. According to city officials:
“The pavement in the right lane of eastbound Fairfax Blvd is cracking and deteriorating due to soft base materials under the roadway. Roadbed reconstruction is a process where the base soils are excavated and replaced with stable compacted stone material. This provides a solid foundation for the pavement and will prevent premature deterioration.”
Reconstructing the roadbed requires deeper excavation and more time than surface paving. Crews will work around the clock in shifts, requiring some weekend road closures.
“Lane closures for extended durations will be necessary,” city officials said. “Motorists can expect continuous weekend lane closures from Friday evening to Monday morning for roadbed reconstruction in the right lane of eastbound Fairfax Blvd.”
“The work will be phased to maintain access to properties as much as possible,” city officials said.
Construction work is expected to wrap up in July, according to the current timetable.
