Renovated Mount Vernon Woods Park to celebrate grand opening this weekend

After months of renovations, Mount Vernon Woods Park is set to officially reopen to the public during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this Saturday (April 18).

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and it will have activities for people of all ages, including skateboarding demonstrations with Fairfax Surf Shop, soccer and community recreation, according to the Fairfax County Park Authority.

“Mount Vernon Woods Park reflects the Park Authority’s commitment to creating welcoming, accessible places where residents of all ages and abilities can gather, stay active and connect with nature,” Jai Cole, Fairfax County Park Authority’s executive director, said in a statement.

The park went through two phases of renovation, which began in June 2024 and was guided by a master plan last updated in 2015. The first phase involved installing a new parking lot, playground, fitness area, shelter, multi-sport court and soccer field.

The second phase added a new skate park, making it the third county-made skate park. The other two are at Wakefield Park in Annandale and at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.

The county’s park authority said that Mount Vernon Woods Park “is a completely new park designed to meet the recreational and wellness needs of a growing community.”

For residents who live near the park, there will be free shuttle service between the Gum Springs Community Center and Mount Vernon Woods Park between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The renovated park, which also has new landscaping, is located at 4014 Fielding Street in Woodlawn.
