Reimagined Velocity Bar and Kitchen opens at University Mall with wings, comfort food

The former Velocity Wings at University Mall has reopened under a reimagined concept, offering the restaurant’s staple chicken wings and a broader lineup of American comfort foods.

Velocity Bar + Kitchen is now open at 10697 Braddock Road, reflecting the business’ evolution “into a more expansive, full-service dining experience while continuing to serve the signature wings guests know and love,” according to a press release from hospitality group Thompson Restaurants.

The restaurant reopened at University Mall near George Mason University’s Fairfax campus this spring alongside a second location in Purcellville, offering new comfort dishes like buttermilk biscuits and honey, “bang bang” shrimp lettuce wraps, alfredo pasta, barbecue baby back ribs and fried chicken and waffles.

The revamped eatery is also hosting a weekday happy from 3-6 p.m. with $6 deals on Nashville hot chicken tenders and loaded nachos. Guests can also order $5 rail spirits, beers and $6 glasses of wine.

Other weekly specials include a two-hour all-you-can-eat specials on ribs (Monday) and wings (Wednesday), as well as two-for-$8 or three-for-$10 tacos on Tuesdays. Thursday features a $23 surf-and-turf special for a ribeye steak, shrimp and fries.

Alex Berentzen, Thompson Restaurants’ chief operating officer, said the group is excited to introduce the concept at its revamped locations.

“People still want a place they can count on,” Berentzen said in the release. “Velocity has always had a loyal following because of the energy, the wings and the sense of community around it. What we’re doing now is building on that with a broader experience, great cocktails, more dishes and an atmosphere that works just as well for date night as it does for watching the game with friends or bringing the family out to dinner.”

Velocity Bar + Kitchen’s hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Elsewhere at University Mall, breakfast and brunch franchise Another Broken Egg Cafe recently opened, while Dona Mesa Tex Mex Kitchen is “coming soon,” according to storefront signage.
