A pedestrian has died after being struck by two different drivers on Richmond Highway early this morning (Thursday).
Police officers and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched to Richmond Highway at Fort Hunt Road in Huntington at around 1:43 a.m. after one of the drivers reported to 911 that they “hit a pedestrian and then another car ran them over,” according to the police scanner.
Upon arriving, responders found the pedestrian, an adult man, lying in the street.
“He’s going to be unconscious, not breathing. The striking vehicle is stopped with their flashers on,” a dispatcher said on the scanner.
The pedestrian, identified as 64-year-old Jerry Harris of Alexandria, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash, the Fairfax County Police Department said, noting that one driver remained on scene.
The second driver left the site of the crash, but the vehicle was subsequently located, the FCPD said in an update released at 6:50 p.m.
Northbound Richmond Highway was closed between Huntington Avenue and Fort Hunt Road until around 6:49 a.m. for the crash investigation.

Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Harris was walking on Richmond Highway “outside of a crosswalk” when he was hit first by a driver heading north in a 2019 Nissan Rogue and then by a 2018 Toyota Rav4 driver who was also northbound, according to the FCPD.
The Nissan driver was the one who called in the crash, while the Rav4 was found later.
“Preliminarily, speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. Alcohol remains under investigation as a factor for the pedestrian,” the FCPD said in a press release. “The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.”
Harris is the third pedestrian to be killed this year on Richmond Highway, following the death of 34-year-old Demarko Shamsiddin on Jan. 7 and 67-year-old Anthony Williams on April 3.
In total, seven pedestrians have now been killed on Fairfax County roads in 2026, including a man who died in a hit-and-run crash in Seven Corners on May 26 that hasn’t been recorded in preliminary state data yet.
There were 62 crashes on Richmond Highway from 2017 through 2025 where a pedestrian or bicyclist was killed or seriously injured, according to an analysis released last month by Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets, a volunteer community group that advocates for pedestrian and bicyclist safety.
In its report, the organization found that a mix of drivers speeding, alcohol intoxication, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure, including crosswalks and lighting, is contributing to the safety issues in the Richmond Highway corridor.
Route 1 was also the site of a multi-vehicle crash in Lorton yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) that sent a motorcyclist to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
