Construction on the Dulles Toll Road over Route 123 (Dolley Madison Blvd) in Tysons will soon divert some drivers onto the Dulles Airport Access Road.
If the weather cooperates, starting around 10 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday), workers will implement a temporary lane split on the eastbound toll road, requiring traffic in the left lane to cross over onto the airport access road, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced yesterday (Tuesday).
Eastbound drivers using the toll road’s right lane will be able to remain on that road.
“This lane split, which will be in place for approximately 18 months, will allow crews to safely work on the eastbound Dulles Toll Road bridge over Route 123 while minimizing disruptions to the flow of traffic,” VDOT said. “All of the eastbound Dulles Toll Road ramps to and from Route 123 will remain open.”
Work has been underway since December to rehabilitate the Dulles Toll Road bridge over Route 123, a project that involves replacing the existing concrete deck, parapets and steel beams and repairing the structure’s piers and abutments. A new overhead sign for eastbound drivers will also be installed.
According to VDOT, the approximately $11.85 million project will extend the bridge’s life span, while making it safer to drive and increasing the vertical clearance for traffic passing underneath on Route 123.
Construction remains on track to finish in early 2028.
“Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution when traveling in active work zones,” VDOT said in a press release. “Be alert to new traffic patterns and limit distractions.”
