Reston Association CEO Peter Lusk can officially drop “acting” from his job title.
The RA board of directors unanimously voted to make Lusk its new permanent CEO, effective immediately, the homeowners’ association announced last Friday (July 17).
Lusk has been part of RA’s leadership team since 2023 as its chief operating officer, but he started also filling in as chief executive officer on an interim basis in January after former CEO Mac Cummins resigned to “pursue new professional opportunities.” The City of Austin in Texas revealed in June that Cummins would be its next director of economic development, starting July 27.
Lusk is now RA’s fourth CEO in eight years.
“It is an honor to be asked to steward a community with the history and relevance of Reston,” Lusk said in a press release. “I look forward to working towards a bright future with our staff, Board of Directors, and membership.”
According to an RA spokesperson, the board of directors decided to appoint Lusk as permanent CEO without conducting a formal search for potential successors to Cummins.
A “formal determination” about whether Lusk will also continue as the association’s chief operating officer hasn’t been made, but no one is serving in the position on an acting basis, the spokesperson told FFXnow.
Board President Travis Johnson praised Lusk for his “steady leadership, sound judgment and unwavering commitment” to his work during his six months as acting CEO.
“The Board has seen firsthand his ability to guide the organization, support our staff, and make decisions that serve the best interests of our members,” Johnson said. “We are confident that Peter is the right person to lead the Association into its next chapter, and we look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the Reston community.”

Prior to working for the Association, he served as a Division Chief in the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. In 2024, Lusk was named to the Leadership Fairfax Top 40 under 40.
Lusk is a Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute, a Certified Public Manager through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and a Facility Management Professional through the International Facility Management Association. He holds a Master’s Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Bachelor’s degree from Fredonia State University.
Counting more than 63,000 Reston residents among its members, RA is one of the largest community associations in the country. Like other HOAs, it enforces property and architectural rules, but it also manages four manmade lakes, a variety of recreational facilities and more than 1,350 acres of open space.
The association’s swimming pools were voted by FFXnow readers last year as the best in Fairfax County.
