Friday Night Live’s 32nd season is winding down, but first, it will celebrate a notable milestone.
Tonight’s show on the Herndon Town Green by rock cover band Shake the Room will be the 500th scheduled by the annual free summer concert series since it launched in 1995.
“When we started Friday Night Live! in 1995, I never imagined we would one day celebrate our 500th show,” series founder Doug Downer said in announcing the achievement. “What began as an idea to bring neighbors together has grown into a lasting Herndon tradition.”
Produced by the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce, Friday Night Live was originally conceived as a way to draw more residents and visitors to downtown Herndon.
According to the chamber, Friday Night Live has become the longest-running free concert series in the D.C. region, continuing uninterrupted through funding uncertainties and even the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers shifted to a virtual format in 2020 before returning to the Town Green in 2021.
In addition to bringing musicians to town, the series supports Herndon businesses by generating foot traffic and enlisting local restaurants as food and drink vendors. This season’s vendors are Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern, Toriz Tacos, Wiseguy Pizza and Dairy Queen.
The program also serves as a fundraiser for the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce’s programs and local community and nonprofit organizations, which receive proceeds from popcorn and glow stick sales as well as donations of alcohol tips.
Since its inception, Friday Night Live has contributed over $425,000 to a variety of organizations, including the Herndon Optimist Club, Herndon Woman’s Club, Herndon High School’s All-Night Grad Party, and school PTAs and athletic boosters.
Downer and Friday Night Live! Chair Laura Poindexter credited the series’ longevity to the support of Town of Herndon officials, sponsors, local businesses, residents and visitors, and the many volunteers who assist with each concert.
“Reaching 500 shows is a massive achievement that speaks to the dedication of our volunteers, the generous support of our local sponsors, and the incredible loyalty of our community,” Poindexter said in a press release. “… It takes over 90 volunteers every single Friday night to pull this off, and I am incredibly proud to lead such a dedicated team.”
For tonight’s concert, concessions will open at 6 p.m. before Shake the Room takes the stage at 6:30 p.m.
Among other potential surprises, Friday Night Live will mark the milestone show by bringing back Downer as its emcee, a role he filled for the series’ first 25-plus years. A “special donation” will also be presented, according to Poindexter.
This was originally going to be the final show of the 2026 season, but after its scheduled appearance on July 17 was canceled due to hazardous air quality from wildfire smoke, 1980s cover band Herr Metal will instead close out the summer on Sept. 11.
