An Alexandria man has been convicted after attempting to rape a housekeeper at a Groveton hotel last year, though several felony charges were dismissed.
Following a two-day bench trial in Fairfax County Circuit Court on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 15 and 16), Oscar Junior Barrios was convicted of the attempted rape and misdemeanor simple assault, according to court records.
Charges of abduction with intent to defile, grand larceny of a person, and attempting to bribe a witness were dismissed.
“People shouldn’t be afraid to go to work or do other daily activities in Fairfax County,” Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said in a statement. “My office will prosecute anyone who threatens that sense of safety.”
According to prosecutors, the victim, a 51-year-old woman, reported to the Fairfax County Police Department on the evening of Oct. 4, 2025 that, while she was cleaning a room at the Quality Inn Mount Vernon (7212 Richmond Highway), a man entered, locked the door, struck her in the head with a green beer bottle, and tried to sexually assault her.
The victim was able to escape, and the man fled the area.
Detectives from the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau later obtained surveillance footage of Barrios buying the beer at a nearby 7-Eleven.
“An eyewitness was able to identify the defendant to officers later that day,” the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said in a press release. “When Barrios was arrested two days later at a nearby bus stop, he was wearing a lanyard that matched one seen on surveillance footage the day of the incident.”
The bench trial was overseen by Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Susan Stoney.
Barrios is scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 4. Under state statute, he could face “confinement in a state correctional facility for life or for any term not less than five years.” The penalty for simple assault runs concurrently with the attempted rape sentence.
