Fairfax County is leading the way in terms of representation in the record-breaking 2026 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.
A total of 1,356 residents aged 50 and older from across the local area are competing in 96 events at 34 locations during the 22 days of competition.
“This is amazing. So many people across our regions are participating” in the 44th annual event, Jane Rudolph, director of the Arlington Department of Parks and Recreation, said at a welcome event held on Saturday (Sept. 19) in advance of the track competition.
Organizers this year decided to have a ceremony midway through the competition, rather than at its start as in previous years.
New contests for 2026 focus on darts and rock-climbing, while weightlifting has returned for the first time since 2022.
Not only does Fairfax County have the largest contingent of participants — Arlington is second — but it also is hosting a significant number of the events, which run through Oct. 4. Host locations range from the Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale and the Oakmont Golf Center in Oakton to a CrossFit gym and Gunston Hall in Lorton.
Mike Coleman, who chairs the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics organizing committee, praised the work of hundreds of volunteers for helping pull off the competition each year.
“We work year-round,” he said.
Coleman jokingly compared the effort to sausage-making.
“It is sometimes not pretty, but the result is often excellent,” he said.
The 2026 effort also benefited from a large number of sponsors, including several operators of local senior living communities, who help fund the athletic competition.
“We very much appreciate their support,” Coleman said.
Competitors in 2026 range in age from 50 to 101 years old, organizers said.
“There are people who have been participating here for 30-plus years,” Rudolph said.
At the welcoming ceremony, Senior Olympics board member Don Tillson received the honor of carrying in the Olympic torch. The Alexandria City High School Junior ROTC Color Guard and Arlingtones Barbershop Quartet also participated.
In addition to Arlington and Fairfax counties, participating jurisdictions include Fauquier, Loudoun and Prince William counties and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax and Falls Church.
